This 1-year full-time or 2-year part-time course is offered by the College of Sciences and Engineering in Hobart.

The course objectives are:

  • to provide advanced in-depth knowledge in a single area of spatial information science;
  • to provide opportunities for training in research;
  • to prepare students for postgraduate research as well as for employment in research organisations; and
  • to provide advanced courses in selected areas of spatial information science.

Career outcomes

The Honours course provides students with advanced skills and research experience in a specialised area of surveying and spatial sciences. Graduates are likely to find employment in Commonwealth or State government agencies, or large private organisations.

Course structure

The Honours course consists of coursework and thesis as prescribed by the degree coordinator. Coursework will be appropriate for the particular research topic chosen and will constitute 25% of the assessment. With the agreement of the degree coordinator, candidates may select from Group 2, 3 and 4 units offered by the College of Sciences and Engineering.

For Full Time Students:

Please enrol in Project A and Project B (or Honours Co-ordinator approved coursework units) and Thesis A in one semester and Thesis B (25%) and C (25%) in the following semester.

For Part Time Students:

Please enrol in Project A and Project B (or approved coursework units) in one semester, followed by Thesis A (25%) in the following semester and so on.

* Students enrol sequentially i.e. Unit A, then Unit B irrespective of the semester in which they start.

Entry requirements

To be eligible to enrol for the degree applicants must either have qualified for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Surveying and Spatial Sciences in this University or have qualified in another university or tertiary institution for a degree deemed by the College of Sciences and Engineering to be equivalent to that degree. In either case, the standard of pass must be of sufficient merit to satisfy the College of Sciences and Engineering.

Admission to Honours courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects and the English language requirements to be eligible for an offer. Admission is conditional on research project and supervisor availability.

English Language Requirements  

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.

Domestic students

Options for this course

Cost shouldn’t get in the way of you studying.

If you’re a domestic student, you may be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place in this course. This means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.

You may also be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.

2024 Total Course Fee (international students): $38,950 AUD*.

Course cost based on a rate of $38,950 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).

* Please note that this is an indicative fee only.

International students

International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
