Physics is the fundamental science, which forms the foundation of engineering and technology, and provides a basis for an understanding of biology, chemistry, geology and other sciences. Physics generates fundamental knowledge needed for the future technological advances that will continue to drive the economic engines of the world. Physics contributes to the technological infrastructure and provides trained personnel needed to take advantage of scientific advances and discoveries. Physics is an important element in the education of chemists, engineers, geologists and computer scientists, as well as practitioners of the other physical and biomedical sciences. Physics extends and enhances our understanding of the other disciplines, such as the earth, agriculture, chemical, biological and environmental sciences.

The Australian Institute of Physics is the professional organisation of Australian physicists.
Theme Areas
Concepts from physics underpin most of the physical sciences and engineering, and are growing in importance in the biological and health sciences. Second and third year physics units provide essential background for the physical science aspects of atmospheric and oceanic modelling work undertaken in the theme area of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies and the astrophysics undertaken in the Frontier Technologies theme area. A more detailed study of fluid mechanics is given in the unit KYA315 Fluid Mechanics, and this material underpins the study of meteorology and oceanography. The first year unit KYA171 Physics for Applied & Life Science gives a basis for understanding ideas in agriculture and mining, for example, and relates to the National & State Development theme area
