DESCRIPTION

This module is concerned with the principles governing, trust and general accounting in legal practice as well as the keeping of account records according to law and good practice to the standard expected of an employed solicitor.

The format of the unit comprises a series of on-site lectures, one-to-one and (small) group tutorials and exercises. In the Trust Accounting module trainees are given instruction on and required to produce Trust Cash Books and Trust Journals for their firm's trust entries, produce a Trust Ledger for each client and prepare reconciliations of their Trust Ledger. In the Office Accounting module trainees are given instruction on and required to produce office accounts for a legal practice.

As part of other units in the Course trainees will maintain a number of simulated files. The trust accounting instructor, fulfilling the role of the Law Society, will on an irregular basis visit trainees' offices and conduct an audit of their trust accounting records.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: Trainees are assessed for compliance with relevant trust and office accounting law and good practice.

TEACHING PATTERN: Unit is part of GradDipLegPrac. Course carries a full-time load taught over 3 days per week. Attendance is compulsory.
