DESCRIPTION

This unit introduces students to the main issues and insights in human-computer interaction (HCI). HCI is the inter-disciplinary field that looks at supporting the various ways people interact with computers including, but not limited to, traditional desktop computers, web interfaces, ubiquitous computing, mixed reality and mobile computing. Designing technologies and interfaces that support users usually requires good understanding of activities and the contexts in which they occur. Conducting and evaluating user studies is therefore a major theme in this unit. Practical requirements of this unit may include user studies and evaluation, design tasks and design reviews. Topics covered in this unit include: understanding interaction, understanding users, understanding collaboration and communication, data gathering and data analysis, interpretation and presentation, identifying user needs and system requirements, interaction design, evaluation approaches.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: 1 minor assignment (5%), 2 major assignments (15% each), 1 exam (60%), participation (5%)
