The unit is designed to allow students to gain practical experience in an authentic library environment. They will use a wide range of analytic and design skills in providing appropriate information resources and services.

TEACHING PATTERN:
The unit consists of 12 hours of workshops: 9.5 hours delivered as a block over 2 days and a subsequent 2.5 hours several weeks later. The workshops introduce a broad range of professional library practices, highlighting the diversity of libraries, their different clients and their varying structures and services. These workshops provide the context for the unit's two 30-hour practical placements in Tasmanian libraries. One placement will be in a large library like UTAS or the State Library of Tasmania and one placement will be in a smaller school, college, special or government library.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
