DESCRIPTION

The unit is designed to allow students to gain an understanding of the range of professional roles and information services offered in a Library by undertaking placements in two Tasmanian libraries.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT:

Practicum 1 assignment (30%), Practicum 2 assignment (30%), Essay (40%)

TEACHING PATTERN:

The unit consists of up to 15 hours of workshops and two 30-hour practical placements in Tasmanian libraries. One placement will be in a large library at UTAS, the State Library of Tasmania or a senior secondary institution and one placement will be in a smaller school, special or government library. The majority of workshops are delivered as a block over 2 days prior to the placements and other workshops take place several weeks later. The workshops introduce a broad range of professional library practices, highlighting the diversity of libraries, their different clients and their varying structures and services.
