The University is progressively introducing new course structures for selected courses from 2010.
The structures will differ depending on whether you are commencing a course in 2010 or are continuing in your course.
To ensure we are showing you the correct course information, please make a selection below.
Are you a commencing (new) student or a continuing (re-enrolling) student?
Once inside the handbook site you can change your choice between old and new courses at any time using the coloured link on the top menu bar.
You can also find out more about new course structures on the Course Structures Project website.
*The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see
Withdrawal dates explained for more information).
This unit covers a broad area of human interface technology design, including both software and hardware aspects.
Since the beginning, humans have built tools to extend their bodies and minds. The modern age provides unprecedented access to technology that can manipulate digital bits and atoms. But in order to realize and exploit the technology of our age, new tools need to be developed that match the capabilities of the machine with the capabilities of the human. This match requires an understanding of both human and machine processes and especially the tasks that together, the human and machine, intend to accomplish.
The purpose of this unit is to provide the student with the knowledge and tools to design interfaces to advanced systems, especially those associated with virtual and augmented reality. The unit is a combination of lectures and hands-on laboratory experiences designing both the hardware and software elements of user interfaces to advanced media technologies, including visual, acoustic and haptic modalities.
