About Census Dates

DESCRIPTION

Since 1991 when the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Parties adopted their protocol on environmental protection, all activity in Antarctica has been viewed through the prism of its potential impact on the environment. Human activities sanctioned under the international treaties that protect Antarctica and manage its uses include scientific research, logistic support, fishing, tourism and non-governmental activity. This unit examines all of these activities and the governance arrangements (including guidelines and regulations) under which they operate to highlight the strengths and weaknesses, gaps and overlaps in environmental management in Antarctica.
