DESCRIPTION This unit utilises the diversity of examples of environmental chemistry in natural, urban and industrial environments within Tasmania to develop an understanding of the sources and fate of chemical contaminants in the environment, and an understanding of the technologies used for minimising pollution, wastes and containment of chemical contaminants, and remediation of impacted sites.
The unit is based around excursions to a number of environmentally interesting and chemically relevant sites in Tasmania, such as impacted mining sites (eg Mt Lyell and Storys Creek), a remediated industrial site (e.g. ex-site of Tioxide near Burnie), and a selection of chemical processing industries (such as Nyrstar, Rio Tinto, TEMCO, Tasmanian Alkaloids). The unit will be delivered by block teaching (1 week of excursions and lectures in Launceston prior to commencement of semester 1) followed by independent problem based learning assignments throughout semester 1. Problem based learning assignments will focus on the development of skills required for conducting environmental assessments and preparing environmental management plans, including development of an understanding of monitoring techniques, sampling plans, environmental guidelines and mass balance techniques.
