The University is progressively introducing new course structures for selected courses from 2010.
The structures will differ depending on whether you are commencing a course in 2010 or are continuing in your course.
To ensure we are showing you the correct course information, please make a selection below.
Are you a commencing (new) student or a continuing (re-enrolling) student?
Once inside the handbook site you can change your choice between old and new courses at any time using the coloured link on the top menu bar.
You can also find out more about new course structures on the Course Structures Project website.
The unit provides an introduction to aquatic animal population biology and the ecological theory and assessment of environmental impact in aquatic environments. Processes influencing the population biology of aquatic animals are examined, the methods by which the parameters of growth, recruitment and mortality are estimated, and the effects of human exploitation of wild aquatic populations (using fisheries case studies). The alternative of sustainable aquaculture is then examined. Key ecological and environmental issues associated with intensive aquaculture in aquatic environments are presented. Provides an introduction to methods for describing and analysing the response of aquatic communities to environmental disturbance, and guidelines for the design of environmental impact studies in aquatic systems.
