The Australian vegetation is shaped by earth, air, fire, water and human activity. In this unit you will become familiar with these elemental constraints on plant growth and how the environment is reflected in the vegetation. You will also learn that the environment is far from static, and that the vegetation of the past reveals past environments. We also consider the role of animals (including humans) in shaping the Australian landscapes of the past and present. An understanding of past environmental change equips us to consider the impacts of current human land use and climate change on future Australian landscapes.
