Vital aspects of an engineer's skill encompasses design, innovation and project management. It is essential that an engineer can work within a framework of professional standards yet have the innovative skills to produce creative design solutions. This unit will introduce students to the design process through a major design project. Project management skills are equally important, and as such, experience in formal project management practices are required from an early stage in an engineer's development.
Students will develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts of engineering design through studying the design of everyday artefacts as well as professional design practices. Students will be introduced to contemporary concepts of innovation and project management within a competitive environment.
The unit also develops a student's technical communication and teamwork skills through group interaction and presentations of design reports requiring components of verbal description, mathematical layout, and complete working drawings.
