*The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see
Withdrawal dates explained for more information).
The main objectives of this unit are to develop an understanding of equilibrium of forces and moments, to develop a problem solving skill set, and to expose students to the profession of Structural Engineering.
The course will build on student's understanding of Newtonian Mechanics without motion and expose students to the engineering approach to problem solving which entails developing a physical model of the real problem, identifying initial/boundary conditions and applying fundamental principles of Equilibrium. Students will gain an appreciation of Structural Engineering through field trips and guest lectures from practicing Engineers.
Specific topics include resolution of vectors, statics of particles and of rigid bodies, free body diagrams, concentrated and distributed forces, centers of gravity and moments of area and inertia, analysis of structures.
This course is the foundation unit in the Mechanics stream and is a prerequisite for KNE151 Engineering Dynamics and KNE212 Mechanics and Structures. The Civil, Mechanical, Mechatronic and Civil/Mining degrees build on this unit.

About Flexible Study Options
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Campus - H Hobart, L Launceston, W Burnie. Study Centre - V Sydney, R Rozelle. Distance units may also have a campus identifier of I Isolated, N Interstate, O Overseas. Units delivered in Transnational Education (TNE) Programs have a campus identifier of A Hangzhou, F Fuzhou, G Shanghai, J Indonesia, K KDU Malaysia, Q Kuwait or Z New Zealand.
Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units - campuses A, F, G, J, K, Q and Z click here for more information.
