An introduction to soil formation, weathering and the key soil types and their landscape position in Tasmania. Land management issues such as soil salinity, soil acidification and the basic nutrient cycles in soils are examined in both the laboratory and in the field. Practicals involve the field description of soils, soil parent materials and the laboratory chemical analysis of soil materials. Three full-day excursions examine the soil-vegetation relationships, soil parent materials, and soil-landform patterns of south-east Tasmania. The issues of sustainable land use and land degradation are also covered in a Tasmanian context.
