DESCRIPTION

This unit focuses on the issues and challenges, both in theory and practice, of working with clients in the context of their intimate personal relationships. Students will have the opportunity to develop their thinking and skills in working systemically with more than one person. Introductory material will provide a framework for thinking about relationships. Following models of best practice in training in family counselling; students will be encouraged to explore the impact their own family of origin experience has had on their functioning as counsellors and to utilise systemic tools for this analysis. Specific attention will be paid to the utility of genograms in assessment and intervention with couples and families. This unit will emphasise the development of skills associated with working with families and couples facing particular challenges and problems through exploring practical counselling interventions. The final section of the unit will be devoted to consideration of diversity issues in family sensitive practice, to an overview of outcome research and to an exploration of ethical challenges involved in working with family and other intimate relationships.
