In this unit introduces students to the field of health psychology in general, including basic concepts and theoretical ideas in health psychology, and the contribution of psychology to understanding health and well-being is examined. Students are introduced to psychological models of health-related behaviour, and some systems of the body involved in psychological and behavioural responses to stress and infection. The relationship between health practitioners and patients is also presented, such as Dr-patient communication, and factors which influence patient's compliance with the practitioner's advice, and their self-regulation of their health. Lectures in rehabilitation psychology examine issues related to vocational and medical rehabilitation.
The laboratory component provides an introduction to measurement in health psychology and students participate in exercises and activities linked to the lecture series and gather data for writing two assignments. The assignments focus on the following areas: issues in the management of a specific chronic illness, and health behaviour change.
