The University is progressively introducing new course structures for selected courses from 2010.
The structures will differ depending on whether you are commencing a course in 2010 or are continuing in your course.
To ensure we are showing you the correct course information, please make a selection below.
Are you a commencing (new) student or a continuing (re-enrolling) student?
Once inside the handbook site you can change your choice between old and new courses at any time using the coloured link on the top menu bar.
You can also find out more about new course structures on the Course Structures Project website.
This unit familiarises students with the acquisition, processing and application of remotely sensed imagery to the physical and human environment. The unit starts with the foundations of electromagnetic energy and its interaction with the atmosphere and the earth surface. The unit covers a range of satellite image systems, aerial photography, and airborne laser scanning. The approach is multi-disciplinary in nature, and is aimed at providing students with the ability to understand and apply remote sensing technology to specific applications. Students will learn to analyse and interpret data from a wide variety of remote sensing systems that acquire imagery in the visible, infrared, thermal infrared, and radar wavelengths. The unit includes applications from vegetation mapping, environmental monitoring, land use mapping, climatology and oceanography. State-of-the-art remote sensing software and imagery is used to illustrate theoretical concepts in computer practicals.
WEIGHT:
12.5%
ASSESSMENT: Assignment 1: online quiz and practical questions (10% ), Assigment 2: questions related to 5 practicals (20%), 2,000-word project report (30%), 2-hr exam (40%)
25% Level 200 in Geography and Environmental Studies (KGA) for students doing a Geography major or 26% of Level 200 science units for all other students
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
Campus - H Hobart, L Launceston, W Burnie. Study Centre - V Sydney, R Rozelle. Distance units may also have a campus identifier of I Isolated, N Interstate, O Overseas. Units delivered in Transnational Education (TNE) Programs have a campus identifier of A Hangzhou, F Fuzhou, G Shanghai, J Indonesia, K KDU Malaysia, Q Kuwait or Z New Zealand.
Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units - campuses A, F, G, J, K, Q and Z click here for more information.
