This unit provides an integrated account of protected area management. While the focus is on Australia, the global context of protected areas is discussed, including issues of definition, representativeness, governance and effectiveness. An important theme carried through the unit is the relationship between protected areas and their surrounding communities and landscapes/seascapes. This is examined in terms of trans-boundary management, community engagement, governance, and Indigenous protected areas. Specific management topics addressed include threatening processes, incidents, fire, recreation and tourism, and cultural heritage. These topics will be explored through the experiences of practitioners, case study examples and fieldwork.
