DESCRIPTION

Ecosystem Conservation offers students, including those without any previous substantial ecological training, a pathway to understanding the basic ideas behind ecology and conservation biology. You will gain knowledge, skills and investigative abilities to be able to discuss and write about the issues surrounding conservation management around the world. Through practical work you will develop an ability to carry out fundamental ecological fieldwork and learn how to report on the information you have collected. Ecosystem Conservation involves workshops, fieldwork and seminars. Through these methods of learning, you will cover a range of essentials relating to ecosystems such as concepts and processes of ecosystems, disturbance (with an emphasis on fire), ecology at the landscape scale, how to survey for flora and fauna, and management and conservation needs of species, communities and habitats. This unit will give you sufficient understanding to be able to critically assess the arguments related to conservation biology, give you the skills to contribute invaluably to environmental management and prepare you for further work in nature conservation in Australia and overseas.
