Sustainable Environmental Management (SEM) focuses on providing for human development and enhancing socio-ecological resilience by working
with natural systems and processes at various scales through effective management approaches and activities. This unit specifically targets the management of human interaction with the environment in terms of sustainable production and consumption of environmental goods and services. We start be examining the need for and the role of SEM in addressing a wide range of human development issues concerning production and consumption, and further evaluate the implications for the environmental management profession while envisaging your role in its practice. We then learn to explain the challenges and complexities involved in SEM, critically analyse the range of management options available and demonstrate the ability to formulate adaptive management solutions. We also learn to appraise the effectiveness of different SEM solutions (as case studies) in varying spatial and temporal scales, and train to communicate constructively to promote the equity, integrity and scientific rigour in adapting approaches to SEM. A mid-semester workshop provides a platform for students to work co-operatively in analysing and devising management solutions to environmental problems.
