Students negotiate a placement in a government or private sector organisation approved by the University. In the placement, students work on one or more tasks under the supervision of a suitably qualified professional. Understandings are developed of environmental planning practice including organisational structure and functions, the role and responsibilities of planners and/or managers, and basic administrative processes. Students are encouraged to develop contacts within the profession and among stakeholders. Workplace skills are developed in areas that pertain specifically to each placement. As well as the placement itself, the unit also includes discussion of generic issues concerning workplace values, morality and ethics, and professional practice. The assessment draws on the students' engagement with the planning literature, their documented preparations for the placement, and critical reflection throughout.
