DESCRIPTION

Humans are causing species extinctions at a rate not seen in the last 65 million years. This unit examines the main reasons for the global decline in animal populations and explores the options to help conserve them. Fauna Conservation Management studies local and international examples of successes and failures to critically examine some of the theory and practice behind conservation. Topics covered include how conservation choices are made, the past and present role of zoos, the importance of conserving communities of animals and their ecological function, and the control of invasive species. The roles of policy development, legislation, activism and private versus public initiatives are also explored. The unit will train students in the formulation of fauna assessment and management plans, including species recovery plans, and their evaluation. The practical work encourages students to apply learned principles to a local fauna conservation challenge. Through guided reading, critical thinking, data collection and analysis, students will be able to propose workable solutions.
