DESCRIPTION

Political ecology brings together the study of natural systems and social systems, exploring political questions of justice and power in the context of environmental transformation and resource use. Drawing upon approaches in human geography, this unit addresses contemporary concerns about the scarcity, distribution and sustainability of natural resources in the light of global power relations, especially between 'developed' and 'developing' countries. Taking food, water and energy as core topics, global patterns of resource production and consumption are analysed. Likely social implications of global environmental change for these resources are also addressed. International case studies, with an emphasis on islands, are presented to investigate complex interactions between local environments and global political and economic processes.
