DESCRIPTION

The unit introduces students to the principles and practices of environmental management by examining the relationships between government, economy, society and environment. Sustainable development is used as a guiding framework for analysis of economic, regulatory and institutional approaches relating to environmental issues. Particular emphasis is given to the concepts and methods of environmental economics. Case studies cover the mitigation of pollution and other environmental externalities; the provision of public environmental goods such as biodiversity; and the optimization of the management of renewable resources such as forests and fisheries.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: 2 essays each 20%, group project 20%, 2-hour exam 40%
