Human geography is the study of human life in the context of space, place and environment, and at every scale from the local to the global. This unit provides students with opportunities to study different conceptual and practical approaches in human geography, encompassing the sub-disciplines of social, economic, political and cultural geography. Students will contribute to discussions about the importance of geography to questions of social order, economic prosperity, political justice and cultural identity. Students will learn hands-on-skills in some of the common research and field techniques that human geographers employ to understand the dynamic interplay between people and place, society and space. On completion of the unit, students should have a comprehensive appreciation of the fundamental ideas of human geography and possess a number of practical skills of immediate relevance to a range of third year units and of extended relevance in various employment sectors.
