DESCRIPTION This unit focuses on construction and primary structural systems of dwellings and similar sized buildings. This unit studies the arrangement and details of systems and materials common in these building types, focusing on concrete, steel, timber and masonry. The statutory requirements are examined in relation to dwellings as well as appropriate Australian Standards for structure and construction. Sustainability is considered through the application of statutory requirements to the building fabric and design. The unit emphasises the integration of design and technology.

ASSESSMENT:
Three assignments weighted at 30%, 30% and 40% respectively.
There are no exams in this unit. One of the assignments is normally run in conjunction with other second year units to reinforce the integration of Building Technology across the course.
If a student is not enrolled in the other units, equivalent assessment tasks will be provided.
Group work may be required in one assignment.
TEACHING PATTERN:
Two hour lecture per week (13 weeks).
Two hours of tutorials and workshops per week (13 weeks).
This unit may include workshop construction and/or testing and site visits.
