DESCRIPTION

In this unit students will develop advanced machine operation techniques as well as build on the timber construction knowledge and hand-tool use developed in FT1. Hand cut dovetail joinery and advanced timber machining will be combined to produce a small traditional drawer and carcass piece. Issues relating to solid timber construction such as wood movement and structural integrity will be addressed in the production of this project. In addition to the set drawer and carcass tasks students will be given the opportunity to investigate and experiment with curved surfaces and the fabrication of curves through a free form lamination exercise to produce a sculptural form or vessel.
