DESCRIPTION

Concentrates on Japanese-American rivalry in the Pacific region from the 1850's, including: Japan's emergence as a significant military power around the time of the Russo--Japanese War, 1904--1905, its subsequent expansion into Korea, Manchuria and China, and its involvement in the Second World War.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: Class participation (10%), 800-word exercise (10%), 2,200-word essay (40%), 2-hr exam (40%)
