About Census Dates

DESCRIPTION
This unit is concerned with the question of the changing/evolving nature of violence in the international realm. Part one of the unit will trace the emergence of modern thought about violence from Niccolo Machiavelli through Hugo Grotius and Immanuel Kant to Carl von Clausewitz and Max Weber. The second part of the unit will trace the establishment of international laws and norms that attempt to regulate the use of force in the international realm, the emergence of so called humanitarian intervention and the relationship between sovereignty, international law and the use of force. The unit will conclude with an evaluation of the New War thesis and a reflection on the extent to which the experience of war in the first years of the 21st century is likely to be continued.
