DESCRIPTION
This unit will examine the origins, theory and practice of public administration and management in modern political systems. Bureaucracy, responsible government, the career service, and the politics, principles and criticisms of 'managerialism' will be examined. The unit will examine the principles of strategic management and planning, budgeting and financial management, performance management and review, organisational design, personnel management and information systems. Enrolment in this unit requires the approval of the relevant Course Coordinator or Head of School.

WEIGHT:  25%

ASSESSMENT: 2 x 4,000 word essays in English

TEACHING PATTERN: 2hr seminar weekly (13 wks)
