DESCRIPTION
This unit deals with contemporary issues in Australian politics framed as they are by Federalism and the challenges of the global economy. The unit explores some of the key themes raised in the 2020 Summit to provide students with a platform to debate and critically discuss issues as they are developed and implemented in public policy processes, the public domain and within our political institutions. Specific topics and issues will vary but could include: the Republic; federation; the Parliament; the public sector; housing; higher education; health; the Arts; climate change; national security, the economy and Indigenous affairs.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: 3,000-word essay (40%), tutorial participation (10%), 2-hr end-of-sem exam (50%)

TEACHING PATTERN: Int: 2-hr lecture weekly, 1 tutorial fortnightly;
Dist. Ed: web-based delivery of 13 lectures, 1 online tutorial discussion fortnightly
