DESCRIPTION

Continental philosophy is a name for various philosophical movements in Europe since the nineteenth century, referring to, among others, existentialism, structuralism and post-structuralism, critical theory, phenomenology, hermeneutical philosophy, and deconstruction. In this unit we shall try to understand the questions and issues discussed in Continental Philosophy. We shall focus on the various methodological principles and the deeper common reactions to the tradition that come to the fore in the writings of a select group of Continental philosophers. A critical evaluation of the merits and demerits of Continental Philosophy will conclude the unit.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: HPA225 - 3,000 words internal assessment (60%), 2-hour exam (40%)
HPA335 -3,500 words internal assessment (60%), 2-hr. exam (40%)

TEACHING PATTERN: internal: 2 hrs lectures weekly, 1-hr tutorial fortnightly (13 weeks)
