DESCRIPTION

Over the past few decades there has been increasing popular and multi-disciplinary academic interest in Aboriginal life and thought. This unit introduces students to Aboriginal philosophy. It explores the nature and significance of Aboriginal cosmogony and examines the philosophical foundations as well as the metaphysical and ethical implications of the Dreaming complex. Particular emphasis is assigned to Aboriginal ontologies of time, place and person, and how they intersect with notions such as community and country according to Aboriginal understandings.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT:

HPA244- 2,000-word essay (40%), tutorial presentation and supporting 500 word paper (20%), 2-hr exam (40%).

HPA344- 2,500 word essay (40%), tutorial presentation and supporting 500 word paper(20%), 2-hr exam (40%).

TEACHING PATTERN:

2x 1hr lectures weekly; 1x 1hr tutorial fortnightly
