DESCRIPTION

What is science? What makes something a science rather than a pseudo-science? Are the natural and social sciences really in the same business? Is there a scientific method, and if so what is it? These are all questions in the philosophy of science. Covering the work of thinkers from Aristotle through Popper and Kuhn to the present, this unit provides a good grounding in the major topics of this field for students in both the BA and the BSc.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT: HPA213 - 3000 words internal assessment (60%), 2-hour examination (40%)
HPA313 - 3500 words internal assessment (60%),2-hour examination (40%)

TEACHING PATTERN: internal; 2-hrs lectures weekly; 1-hr tutorial fortnightly (13 wks); dist ed: choice of print-based or web-based delivery (13 wks)
