DESCRIPTION China's national minorities occupy eight percent of its total population. Although few in number, they are spread over around 60 percent of China's territory, including some of the largest provinces such as Xinjiang, Tibet and Inner Mongolia. This unit is designed to offer students a unique opportunity for insights and understanding into the diversity and varied cultures and religions of peoples who live in the frontiers of China. We also examine the interactions between the centre and the periphery in terms of politics, economics and population movements through a multidisciplinary approach, taking in anthropology, folklore and cultural studies.
