This unit examines the use of costume in selected sites throughout modern Asia to express national, group and individual identity. Students will consider case studies such as the use of military attire in the first half of the twentieth century in East Asia, the kimono as commodity in 1920s Japan, contemporary cos-play, fashion culture flows in south-east, east and north-east Asia in addition to the relationship between costume and religious beliefs.
