About Census Dates

DESCRIPTION
This unit explores the relationships between knowledge, power, perception, and notions of truth which operate through the reporting of Asia. The unit moves beyond analysis of representations of Asia and Asians by examining how the media 'constructs Asia' through technical devices such as coding and framing, through technology, and through selective reporting. It raises questions regarding censorship, propaganda, globalisation of media and its impact on culture, the relationship between politics and media, the role of correspondents. Technology (television, video, the internet) is examined through discussing the Korean, Viet Nam, Gulf and Iraq wars. Various area case studies are used in the unit: India, China, Hong Kong, Bali, Indonesia and East Timor. 'Visual literacy' is one of the key themes of this unit. The unit examines key images from Asia and their impact, construction and meanings.
