This unit will begin by introducing students to the basic pillars of the Islamic faith and then outline some key stages in the historical process of Islamisation in Asia. Following a brief examination of the origins and organisational developments of Islamic activism in Asia, it will then address a number of contemporary issues including Islamic attitudes towards Western ideas and values, social change in Islamic countries, the programs and objectives of Islamic parties, the internationalist dimension of Islamic activism, as well as Islamic radicalism. The unit will focus primarily on developments and events in Southeast Asia (especially Indonesia and Malaysia), but other regions such as the South Asian subcontinent may also be included for comparative purposes.
