DESCRIPTION Primarily concerned with the emergence of modern Asia. The unit begins with an analysis of European colonialism, its economic effects and cultural assumptions. The 20th centurywas one of profound change and the unit considers the major events, people, and social, economic and political developments in Asia. Topics include: European ideas about Asia, capitalism and socialism in Asia, nationalism, independence and separatist movements and struggles, globalisation, tourism, popular culture, rock music.
