This unit introduces students to pre-20
th century Asia as a region comprising a great diversity of people, cultures, religions and ideas. It challenges simplistic portrayals of pre-modern Asia as never-changing and bound by static tradition. By using the themes of travel and the traveller, this unit explores how the movement of people, ideas, and material goods made pre-modern Asia one of the most exciting and vibrant regions of the world. Other topics covered include the 'silk road', religion and belief systems (indigenous beliefs, Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Daoism and Islam) and the design and ritual significance of houses, gardens and cities.
