This unit is designed to introduce students to the issues and processes associated with working with offenders, particularly those under the authority of corrective services and community corrections. The unit explores issues pertaining directly to how best to work with a wide variety of offender groups. Topics to be covered include duty of care, difficult prisoners, specific offender groups, safety and security, working with involuntary clients, models of integrated offender management, prison culture and prisoner attitudes, inmate assessment and offender narratives, restorative justice and victim interests in a corrections setting, and report writing. The unit provides a practical foundation for working with offenders in prison and in the community.
