Focuses on the emergence of new forms religiousl belief and spiritual experience in contemporary Australia and in other post-industrialising societies. Students are first introduced to sociological analyses of the links between religion and social change. There is a particular focus on the New Age, Witchcraft and the new religious movements such as the Moonies, the Children of God and the Branch Davidians, and on the renewal of formal religion through processes such as fundamentalism and Pentacostalism. Students who complete the unit develop their general social analytical skills and in particular their understanding of religious, spiritual, and magical beliefs and practices.
