DESCRIPTION Examines the sociological concepts, theoretical models and methods of inquiry that have been developed for the analysis of modern industrial societies. The development of concepts, models and methods in 'classical' and more recent sociology is traced and linked to specific historical and contemporary cases. The unit is focused on six topic-areas: change and stability, culture and values, inequality, self and interaction, social structure, solidarity and conflict. The unit will provide students with the following: (1) an understanding of the nature, development and variety of sociological concepts, models and methods; (2) an ability to apply sociological concepts models and methods to events and processes in modern industrial societies.
