DESCRIPTION This unit introduces students to a sociological perspective on health and illness in contemporary Australian society. Focusing on the usefulness of this perspective within the nursing context, the unit is divided into four modules: (1) 'Ideas about health and illness' explores different approaches to health and illness in the Australian context; (2) 'Social structure and health' examines health and illness patterns in Australia with a focus on the effects of marginalisation and exclusion, including those experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; (3) 'Experiencing health and illness' applies a sociological approach to understanding issues and contemporary debates about health and illness; and (4) 'Working in health' explores health care systems, the health workforce and complementary and alternative medicine.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
