DESCRIPTION
This unit introduces students to a sociological perspective on health and illness in contemporary Australian society. Focusing on the usefulness of this perspective within the nursing context, the unit is divided into four modules: (1) 'Ideas about health and illness' explores different approaches to health and illness in the Australian context; (2) 'Social structure and health' examines health and illness patterns in Australia with a focus on the effects of marginalisation and exclusion, including those experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; (3) 'Experiencing health and illness' applies a sociological approach to understanding issues and contemporary debates about health and illness; and (4) 'Working in health' explores health care systems, the health workforce and complementary and alternative medicine.
