DESCRIPTION
Sociology A introduces students to the key elements of the sociological perspective including its central concepts and ideas. It explains how sociological thinking challenges and extends commonsense understanding of the social world. It provides the conceptual framework for explaining and interpreting both contemporary social transformations and everyday social experiences. Most importantly of all it demonstrates the usefulness of a discipline that is dedicated to understanding change at local, national and global levels. This is achieved by addressing five questions:

  • What is sociology?
  • Where does sociology come from?
  • How can we understand human difference sameness and conflict?
  • Why is change a built-in feature of modern societies, and where are they headed?
  • How do people experience key components of society in their everyday lives?

At the end of the unit students should understand how the study of sociology helps to inform a changing world as well as the challenges that confront them in the future.
