About Census Dates

DESCRIPTION
This unit considers the emergence of Aboriginal writing with a specific focus on the Aboriginal life histories genre. Several life histories from different regions of Australia are considered using a range of reading strategies. Key historical themes are examined to provide contextual background and to facilitate nuanced readings of the texts. Such themes include topics of particular concern to many Aboriginal authors and Australian communities generally, such as the Stolen Generations and the national apology. Other themes include place, identity, and belonging. Some issues surrounding the production of Aboriginal life history texts are canvassed. Attention is also given to translating a life history into film.
