This unit will investigate the Aboriginal presence in Australia until the late eighteenth century and the exciting debates over the longevity of human occupation, archaeology, megafaunal extinctions and land management practices, such as firestick farming. The unit will also consider the development of distinct regional cultures, including Tasmania, technological change, early external contacts and the impact of disease, particularly the controversial smallpox epidemic of 1789.
