DESCRIPTION

This unit will investigate the Aboriginal presence in Australia until the late eighteenth century and the exciting debates over the longevity of human occupation, archaeology, megafaunal extinctions and land management practices, such as firestick farming. The unit will also consider the development of distinct regional cultures, including Tasmania, technological change, early external contacts and the impact of disease, particularly the controversial smallpox epidemic of 1789.

WEIGHT:  12.5%

ASSESSMENT:

Assignments (60%); 2 hr end of semester examination (40%)

200 Level (Internal):
750 word paper (15%), tutorial presentation and information literacy exercise (10%), 2,250 word essay (35%), 2 hr exam (40%).
200 Level (Distance)
750 word review (20%), 2,250 word essay (40%), 2 hr exam (40%).
300 Level (Internal)
750 word paper (15%), 2,750 word essay (35%), tutorial presentation and information literacy exercise (10%), 2 hr exam (40%).
