DESCRIPTION The unit surveys the key moments in the development of modernism in the visual and performing arts, film and design, from the late 19th century across the first half of the twentieth century, with emphasis on major avant-garde movements and practitioners. From mid-20th century and into the 21st century consideration will be given to the development of critical expressions and frameworks such as poststructuralism, postmodernism and postcolonialism, as well as the rise of neo-avant-garde movements beyond the centres. Particular emphasis will be placed on visual and performing arts operating from a socially critical agenda, and on the e-media challenge to concepts of "liveness" and "authenticity". Shifting cultural boundaries will be mapped, and the phenomena of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary practices will be investigated.
