DESCRIPTION The unit considers the economic, philosophical, scientific and religious conditions that contextualised shifts from the anonymous artisan to the individual inspired artist, a conception which remains potent in contemporary arts practice. Centred on the development of Renaissance humanism, and the recognition of individuals such as Shakespeare and Brunelleschi, lectures will dip back into the sources for individual artistic expression that can be found in the classical world, and the later retrieval and interpretation of these ideals in the context of the Enlightenment and its aftermath.
