The unit provides a background to understanding the arts and design in contemporary Australia. The unit surveys the development of the arts and design since colonisation, making use of the resources of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and other institutions as well as the natural and built heritage of the Launceston area. Topics may include: arts patronage; the Aboriginal arts industry; migration, assimilation and multiculturalism; environmentalism and the arts; film and myth; digital distance and globalism; regionalism; communities and culture; post-colonialism; war and conflicts; arts, crafts and architecture; tastemaking, curatorship and production.
